Leuna sits between Merseburg and Halle, but not halfway. From our houses in central Merseburg it is 4.6 kilometres and six minutes to the plant. From central Halle it is 18 kilometres and 23 minutes; from Halle-Neustadt 31 kilometres, because the river Saale lies in between and you drive around it. For a crew on shift work that is twice twenty minutes every day — with twelve people over four weeks, a figure that shows up in the costing. Staying in Merseburg means you are not sitting in rush-hour traffic on the B91.
Leuna is currently one of the largest construction sites in Germany. More than a hundred companies are investing around 1.3 billion euros in green chemistry and research. Linde is building another electrolyser for green hydrogen by the end of 2026, Ontras has commissioned the first pipeline from the Bad Lauchstädt energy park and is extending the connection to the hydrogen network, and the refinery is switching to green hydrogen. That is why so many outside crews are here: it is not the running plant that needs them, but the conversion. Anyone arriving for one of these projects rarely stays a week — it is usually months.
The rhythm of a chemical site runs on plant shutdowns. When a unit is taken offline for inspection, repair or rebuilding, hundreds of extra tradespeople arrive for a few weeks — pipe fitters, insulators, scaffolders, boilermakers, electricians, industrial cleaners. In those weeks nothing in the area is free, and whoever enquires only then drives their people in from Leipzig or further. Those who plan ahead get in touch earlier. We hold fixed rates for corporate clients from ten nights a month and take reservations before the shutdown date is public.
From Merseburg you take the B91 and the works road to the main gate; the route avoids driving through villages.
