Europe's freight hub, and still growing

Leipzig/Halle is one of the largest freight airports in Europe: around 1.4 million tonnes a year, a rise of over 200 per cent since 2008. Some 13,000 people work at the site, more than 10,000 of them in freight handling, cargo airlines, forwarding and warehousing; DHL Express alone employs around 7,000. Roughly 25,000 jobs in the region depend on the hub. Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG is planning an expansion of around 500 million euros — additional stands for freight aircraft and new buildings. Where that much construction happens, outside firms are on site.

Most of the work happens at night

A freight hub runs against the rhythm of everyone else: aircraft arrive late in the evening, freight is handled overnight and departs before morning. Anyone coming in for technical work, conveyor systems, building services or ground handling works to that pattern. That is why our door-code check-in matters here: you get into the flat at three in the morning exactly as you would at three in the afternoon, and nobody waits for a key. The route from Gohlis along the B6 is clear at those hours anyway.

Twenty-two minutes from Delitzsch too

The airport lies at Schkeuditz, between Leipzig and Halle, directly on the A14. From Leipzig-Gohlis it is 14.3 kilometres and fifteen minutes, from Alt-Lindenau 17.2 and twenty-two, from Delitzsch 19.7 and likewise twenty-two, from central Leipzig 22.3 and twenty-three. Four locations within half an hour — for a larger crew that means we can spread people out without sending anyone far. From Halle it is twenty-six minutes, from Merseburg over thirty.

Getting there, parking, meals

The A14 connects the airport from every direction; the Schkeuditz exit leads straight onto the site. Our Leipzig accommodation comes with parking, including for vans. Arriving without a car: take the S-Bahn — it runs directly from Leipzig central station to the airport station, and from Gohlis the tram gets you to the main station quickly. Each flat has a fully equipped kitchen, which is worth more than any restaurant when you are on nights.
