A power plant build with heavy outside assembly

Saale Energie is erecting a combined-cycle gas and steam plant of around 900 megawatts at Schkopau, together with an industrial gas turbine unit. Early works started in January 2026; completion is expected in 2029 or 2030. A build of this size is not carried by the permanent workforce: pipe fitting, steelwork, boiler assembly, electrical and control systems, insulation, scaffolding — that comes from outside firms, and over years rather than weeks. Anyone with a contract here is not looking for a room for next week but for quarters for the build.

And the dismantling at the same time

The opposite movement is running at the same site: Dow is shutting down the chlor-alkali and vinyl plants at Schkopau, along with the steam cracker at nearby Böhlen. It began in mid-2026 and runs to the end of 2027. A shutdown is not the end of the work — it is dismantling, demolition and disposal, and the demand stretches across two winters. For demolition, plant dismantling and industrial service firms that is a market of its own which happens to sit next to the new build. We have beds for both.

Why we can offer three houses here

Schkopau lies between Merseburg and Halle, which works in our favour: Merseburg 9.3 kilometres and fourteen minutes, central Halle 10.4 kilometres and seventeen minutes, Halle-Neustadt 13.1 kilometres and twenty minutes. Three locations within twenty minutes means we can house a crew of fifteen without anyone driving three quarters of an hour. Leipzig is out — over forty minutes from there, and that is no longer proximity.

Getting there and how we invoice

Schkopau sits on the B91 between Merseburg and Halle; the A38 is a few minutes away. Our accommodation comes with parking, including for vans carrying tools. For builds running several months we do not charge by the night: from ten nights a month we agree fixed rates, and for longer assignments we talk monthly prices. Ask before the first booking — it rarely gets cheaper afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How far is it to Schkopau power plant? From Merseburg 9.3 kilometres in about 14 minutes, from central Halle 10.4 kilometres in 17 minutes, from Halle-Neustadt 13.1 kilometres in 20 minutes.
There are fifteen of us. Is that possible?Yes, across Merseburg and Halle together — both are within twenty minutes of the site. Tell us early and we arrange the units so your crew is not split up.
The contract runs over a year. Are there monthly rates?Yes. From ten nights a month we agree fixed rates; for construction periods of several months we talk monthly prices. Ask before your first booking.
We are doing dismantling, not construction. Are we in the right place?Yes. The shutdown of the Dow plants at Schkopau and Böhlen runs to the end of 2027 and ties up dismantling and demolition capacity across two winters. For us it is the same demand.
Will we get an invoice made out to the company?Yes, with VAT shown, in the company name — including companies based outside Germany.
